Avery County elevation and terrain tools
Mountains • County seat: Newland
Avery County holds some of the highest ground in the Blue Ridge, from the summits of Grandfather Mountain on its eastern edge to the grassy balds of the Roan Highlands along its western line with Mitchell. Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain stand over the valleys of the Elk and Linville rivers, which drain in opposite directions off the crest.
