Dare County is mostly water and barrier island, running down the Outer Banks from Kitty Hawk past Jockey's Ridge and Roanoke Island to Cape Hatteras, with Pamlico Sound on one side and the open Atlantic on the other. Its mainland across Croatan Sound is a low peat pocosin along the Alligator River, scarcely above the water.
