Brunswick County is the southeastern corner of the state, where the Cape Fear River meets the ocean at Cape Fear and a chain of barrier islands fronts the coast from Bald Head Island west to Sunset Beach. Inland the ground is nearly flat, much of it the peat and pocosin of the Green Swamp, with the Waccamaw River along its western line.
