New Hanover County elevation and terrain tools
Coast • County seat: Wilmington
New Hanover County is a low peninsula between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic, with Wilmington on a rise above the river and a line of barrier islands from Figure Eight Island through Wrightsville Beach and Masonboro Island to Carolina Beach. Tidal marsh and sound lie behind the beaches, and the ground inland is sandy and nearly flat.
