Pender County is flat coastal plain where the Black River and the Northeast Cape Fear River wind through broad swamps toward the Cape Fear on its southwestern line. The pocosins of Holly Shelter and Angola Bay cover its interior, and Topsail Island, a thin barrier beach, forms its coast.
