Carteret County is a long arm of marsh, sound and barrier island reaching out to Cape Lookout, with Core Banks and Shackleford Banks sheltering Core Sound and Bogue Banks fronting Bogue Sound. The mainland behind is low and flat, cut by the Newport and North rivers and spreading north into the pocosins of the Croatan and the shore of the Neuse estuary.
