Mountains • County seat: Franklin
Macon County centers on the broad valley of the Little Tennessee River at Franklin, with the Nantahala Mountains and Wayah Bald rising on its west and the Cowee Mountains on its east. To the south the Cullasaja River falls through a steep gorge from the Highlands plateau, where the Blue Ridge Escarpment drops away toward Georgia.
