Foothills • County seat: Rutherfordton
Rutherford County lies below the Blue Ridge Escarpment, which breaks through its western edge at the Hickory Nut Gorge, where the Rocky Broad River falls past Chimney Rock to Lake Lure. The South Mountains close its northeastern corner, and between the two the Broad and Second Broad rivers run through rolling foothills.
